Thank God for Evolution

By Cathy · Comments Comments Off

“The universe took 13.7 billion years to produce this amazing book.” So wrote John Mather, an astrophysicist with NASA and winner of the 2006 Noble Prize in Physics.Tonight, John Reed and I are facilitating the first of five meetings to read Michael Dowd’s book, “Thank God for Evolution.” I’m looking forward to it.

Welcome to my first blog about Celebrating Evolution.

The goal of this blog and web site is to celebrate our 13.7 billion year cosmic journey from the Great Radiance to this moment and beyond.

This site explores the idea that we can find meaning and purpose in our lives by understanding the science of evolution in a sacred way.

For many people, evolution is about a meaningless struggle for existence punctuated by occasional pleasant distractions before death of the individual and extinction of the species. For many people, the randomness of evolution makes them feel like they are nothing but mutant humans who little better than a cancer on the planet.

The goal of this site is to show that instead of random struggle for a meaningless existence, evolution is something to celebrate.

In just the past few years, science has revealed some astonishing facts that show evolution is about greater cooperation, greater consciousness and greater compassion. Yes, there is some struggle, but survival of the fittest is really about survival of the most cooperative, the most effortless, and the most compassionate.

This site has resources to learn about the science that reveals our sacred path. It also contains links to groups pursuing a new spirituality based on evolution.

This site is enthusiastically created by Cathy G. McGowan Russell, who was has been studying evolutionary biology since 1978. She earned her Ph.D. in microbiology with a dissertation based on her research on the evolution of bacteria. Now, Cathy is delighted to share with you what she has learned about evolution as well as the material and spiritual implications of this for our lives.
